transmission question

My wife's 1999 Accord has this situation. When accelerating at a
normal pace and the engine (automatic) shifts into 3rd gear and you
then push your foot down to pass (i.e. getting on the expressway) and
the engine down-shifts into second gear, there is a slight hesitation
with the engine still reving before the car takes off.

I went to a transmission place and they said there was "metal debris in
the system". He said they did not know what kind of metal but they
would have to take apart the transmission to look inside ($500 labor)
plus the cost of parts. Is there any truth to this or is he just going
to not do anything and say something like "well, the parts look
    good...cash or credit?"

If there is something wrong will it eventually hurt the car and make it
(maybe) not operable, or can I just not floor it in this situation?

    Thanks!!

Yeah, and they would have refilled it with Dexron and an additive when
they were through too. (putting non-Honda ATF in can be FATAL in the
    long-term).

Go to Honda dealer, buy 7 quarts of Z1 ATF and a crush washer,
drain-n-fill it once (3.5 quarts, it's easy) and drive it a week. Then
do it again. Go to google, click on 'groups', and search for honda
drain-n-fill. Thorough instructions will be found.

P.S. Always mention the mileage, it's not Psychic Wednesday.

What is Z1 ATF? Is that trans fluid? I had it replaced 1-2 oil
changes ago at my regular service center. Don't know what brand they
    used, though.

As the Honda slogan says: "Don't let strangers under your hood"

Z1 is the Honda Automatic Tranny Fluid. There are no substitutes. You
will have to do a drain-n-fill three times now, if you want to stop your
tranny from shredding itself. Do not power-flush. Search this newsgroup
    for more info.

As for the shifting / hunting, a Honda tranny IS different, and may
CLUNK into gear at low speed, especially at a YIELD sign.

Here's an AMSOIL discussion that will open your eyes about how special
    the additives in Honda Z1 ATF are . . . . .

Z1 is the correct Honda ATF. Who knows what your "regular service
center" used. Unless they were a Honda specialist, they probably put in
    the wrong stuff!

Honda trannies do this. Probably a lot. Mine have. And being a lazy
bugger I've had all my maintenance on-scheduled at the dealer. You
think that's bad, try accellerating at maximum pace with one of these
    sticky trans, definitely bad news.

In any case, even if your service center has been using the proper Z1,
an extra drain-and-fill or two will likely make things better, for
about 5k miles, before it slowly slides back to misbehavior.

So why 3 times now when earlier you said 2 times?

Is your user name from The 3 Stooges...a combo of "Curly Q" when they
were talking pig latin and Links from "The Missing Link"?

    1) Since it sounds like your tranny is presently CONTAMINATED with
Non-Honda fluid, you need to be more thorough about getting ALL the
other stuff out. I would normally only do it twice.

    2) Soitainly !!

because it's more thorough. only about 40% of the fluid changes each time.
