I have a 1989 Honda accord LXI 4d with 1.4 liter engine. Automatic
Trannie Reverse barily works and I have to keep in in D3 to drive it .
It doesn't want to shift into 4th gear. I called around looking for
estimates for a rebuild and the lowest I have gotten so far is $850USD

Is that too high? Way too low. I am around the cincinnati Ohio area so
    any help would be great.

I would expect to cost to be about $1500 or so. Yes, Honda Automatics are
    expensivse to rebuild.

    And since your in Cincy.......
For a rebuild, I would talk with Gene Jr. at R&R Transmissions in
    Madisonville.
For a used replacement, contact Tiptons U.S. 25 Autoparts in Walton, KY.

  3. I've rebuild an 89-lxi automatic with an exact symtom.
    Here's what I replace/do (technical stuff:)

1.) Reverse gear selector (dealer only part)
    2.) 4th gear (dealer only)
3.) Sanding "throttle valve" with a 600 grit sand paper
    solves the 4th gear phenominom.

The gears shatters, throw tiny particles around which cloggs
a valve. I'd work on it again anytime, but it requires us to be
    crafty and organized.

Arm yourself with knowledge for any pricing
    disputes. Parts = $200, labor = $200.

Rebuids I know of locally cost about $860 while a working
    recyled version cost $650.
