under-hood squealing on 95 accord

Discussion in 'Accord' started by Rodney William Rudd, Nov 18, 2003.

  1. I have a strange squealing noise coming from under my hood when I am
driving, and I was wondering if anyone had any clues.

    First - car details:
    1995 Accord EX 5-speed 2.2L 4-cyl.
    164k miles

Here are comments about what is going on:

-It seems to happen regardless of whether the engine is warmed up or cold
-It only happens when the engine is under load
-Seems to be between 2000RPM and 4000RPM

If I am driving along and press on the gas to speed up, I get squealing
from the engine. If I am driving along at a constant speed, I can't hear
it. It is a high-pitched sound that is almost like metal-on-metal from a
bad bearing, but since it only does it when the engine is loaded, I am not
sure what the source is. It doesn't seem to matter what gear I am in
either....it just matters that I put more load on the engine. I opened
the hood and revved the engine with the throttle valve in hopes of hearing
it, but without any load, it doesn't seem to happen. When I do hear the
squealing, the pitch doesn't change much as the engine speed increases.
Any clues??? I want to address the problem before something catastrophic
happens, but I don't have too much to go on.

  3. Rodney,
Most importantly, look inside your distributor cap first, for the
presence of red dust. Next, I'd try spraying some water on the drive
belts and see if that cures it for a few minutes. If it does, retension
or replace the belts. If you have AC, try your tests with it on, as well
as off. Headlights and heater fan also add load. Might help you isolate
    which belt is doing it.

It could also be the timing belt idler pulley or even water pump. Has
the timing belt been changed? If the noise persists, you might want to
get the timing belt done A.S.A.P. or risk a very expensive engine job.

Let the group know what you find...

Also, a bearing in the A/C might be seizing. Either the compressor or
a pulley. This happened to a '90 Integra I had.
