Read where its a good Idea to cover your vin number, as someone( thief)
could write it down and go to the dealer, and they would cut a new key on
    the spot.

Tell ya what: Why don't _you_ try just that?

Just pick out an Honda at random in the parking lot of the nearest strip
mall. Write down the VIN and go to any dealer that doesn't know you.

Now go try and get a key cut.

    Did it work? No?

Much depends on how 'on the ball' that particular dealer is, and/or the
individual employee/s working there. Of course this kind of crap isn't
    limited to Honda...

Theft rings with members working in dealerships isn't new news.

  4. They get even more suspicious if you want a keyless entry transmitter at the
same time. The big red lights come on if they ask for ID and you stall.

Some dealers up here even want to see the original ownership when you bring
a car in for service for the first time.

I said I read about it, ......didn't say I was going to try it, I didn't ask
how to disconnect the odometer, chill out!

Many of the models have the keyless entry embedded in the key.

  8. The models with smart keys are a headache for the legitimate owner to get
copies for. Imagine a no-name trying to get one.

If a thief is bent on taking a specific car, enough to go to the trouble of
getting a key made, there are a lot of easier and more anonymous ways to
accomplish that. Of course, even the tow-truck thieves are susceptible to
    Lo-Jack.

I was in my dealer's parts department yesterday and on the counter there was
a notice from the local PD stating that thieves have been stealing cars by
having dealers cut keys using the VIN. So, this would lead me to believe
that it not only is possible, but has been a problem.

  11. Certainly possible, a problem sporadically, a threat rarely. See Snopes
    http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/vin.asp for their usual thorough
    treatment of the issue.
