Voltage Regulator in Alternator?

I was having a strange intermittent battery light problem (which I
would be happy to explain in more detail later if you want), and
finally decided it must be the alternator, so replaced it today. It
worked great for about 2 miles, and then the light went on again. Now
the voltage across the battery when it is running is too high - I read
as much as 17.5V. If I'm reading my chilton manual right, the voltage
regulator is in the alternator, but I want to verify that.

So did Autozone sell me an alternator with a bad voltage regulator? The
original problem was not charging when the light came on - when the
light was off it was 14.5V, which I understand is normal charging
    voltage.

AutoZone or PepBoys et al., should be happy to test that for you.

It turned out it was a bad VR in the alternator they sold me - it was
putting out 25.5V on the test bench. Luckily the second time around was
easier and I got a good one in there, and all is well.
