    Curly:

did as you said - took the "bad switch" off - replaced with a switch
from the back that was working - no go AND the good switch on the back
has stopped working when i put it back to where it had been working a
few seconds before - a real head scratcher ... something need to be
reprogrammed in the ECM??? weird very weird

Jiggle the switch on the passenger's door and see if the interior light
flashes. Spray some silicone in it if it's sticking. Single phillips
screw will remove it if you want to look at how simple the mechanism is.

If you just move the switch you still have an open circuit. replace
the switch. We see these every day

Yes, but "jiggling" a switch where the contact surface is corroded or
arc'd will usually allow intermittant operation, enough to tell if the
    switch is really the problem.

Given that the headlights are not working properly as well, I'd almost
suspect that the shop didn't properly reconnect a wiring harness
somewhere - possibly one of the big molex connectors under the dash or
into the back of the instrument cluster not fully plugged in.
