Weird noise at 1900 RPM

    Hi All,

Something odd has been happening with my '98 Acura Integra (base model,
manual transmission). When the RPMs begin to drop and reach 1900 RPMs,
there is a sound I hear that seems to be two surfaces rubbing or grinding
against each other. It last for less than a second but consistently occurs
whether the car is in neutral or in gear.

Anybody have a clue as to what this might be?

    Any info would be appreciated.

Good guess. My mechanic just called and mentioned it as the potential
    problem.

What would be extent of the repairs if you both are right? What would be
involved and do you think it should be costly?

    Exhaust downpipe rattle, quite common.

Nothing a few hammer hits and screwdriver prys can't take care of. I just
ripped the F-er off after a while. I've done this on a 97 Civic, 93 Escort
and 93 Bonneville in the past. You can try to weld them back up, but the
    rattle always returns.

Thanks for info. I've heard of the problem before but I was perplexed when
the sound was occuring at a specific RPM. I guess when the engine hit 1900
RPMs, this condition coincided with some natural frequency.

Would you think that might possibly be what I have been hearing at about
4500 RPM in 5th gear for nearly ever? I posted about it here once
before wondering if it was engine pinging of some sort. But at least
two mechanics I trust have told me that is not the case and not to worry
about it... so I mostly don't.

possibly. different things resonate at different frequencies.

Unfortunately it sounds like a very common problem that occurs in
Acura Integra and Honda Accord alike. I would take the car in for
transmission overhaul as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
See other posts on transmissions and Accords.

    Good luck...

There could be a number of possibilities that are causing that sound.
Check with the exhaust manifold bolts and hangers from underneath your
vehicle. Next double check your ignition timing and also you alternator
    belt. Hope this helps.
