Nothing, really. It's just a way to get rid of all the has-beens, until the
    newly redesigned '98 came out.

Since 1981, Honda has offered a "Special Edition Accord" in the fourth and
final year of a generation. I can remember an "SE" in 1981, 1993, 1997.
Generally, it is priced between the LX and EX and it includes certain items
    like a leather interior.

Consider that the Accord's most direct competitor, the Toyota Camry, also runs
in four year generations, but they run a year earlier. So, in 1997 the Camry
was restyled while the Accord had one more year left with the 'old style'.
Hence, the Special Edition was introduced to spur sales in what would otherwise
be a off year for the Accord.

97 was the first year for the special edition to become not so special. The
SE in 83, 85, 89, 91, and 93 all were top of the line cars with leather, sun
    roof, etc.

In 97 it became the value package. They took all of the "options" people
typically bought or requested and put that in the car. They all have ABS,
Alloy Wheels, Sunroof, CD, Keyless entry, and floor mats. (they dropped the
sunroof for the 2000). Then they dropped about 1000 bucks off of what a
    simliarly equipped accord would cost.

  5. ....only since the 97 Special Edition. Before that SEs were top-of-the-line.

    You are correct.

Along that vein, the 1993 SE was the first Accord with dual airbags.
